Vintage sewing machines are tough. They are strong and can out perform many modern domestic sewing machines when it comes to heavy materials. But.......BUT, they are not industrial and like any machine, they have limits. Here, I discuss why even these tough, all metal vintage machines do have their limits. Staying within those limits will keep you and your beloved old machine working and ready ...

I have this machine! It’s so cool that you can sew on so many different thicknesses and types of fabric! I’ve been playing around with mine and it seemed to do anything so long as I was using the right needle, but this is so cool!! I’ve always used my grandmothers machine, it’s a big old plastic thing. Couldn’t handle anything. Only did cotton and stuff. This? Leagues ahead.

I got a kenmore from my neighbor. It still has the original guidebook and feet for it. It was back in the late 1940’s to early 1950’s. I recently got it fixed up and god I Adore this machine!

Have you ever heard of a white straight stitcher model 7013? I am thinking of adding this model which is a straight stitcher to my collection but never see one like it on you tube or on the lists of models for White websites.

Can you show how to re assemble and order the clutch release? Mine has a small piece of leather inside that goes in two slots and its very confusing because now my needle will not move.

This is great, and an enormous help. Is sewing machine oil simply what is otherwise sold as "mineral oil?" I have been told that - and it's available less expensively in bulk - but I can't find what sort of petroleum the trade name sewing oils are.

Thank you for being a “tinker”. Appreciate your videos. Wish we could see you once in awhile. I understand if you’d rather not reveal yourself. I am 66 live in Florida and at present own 3 featherweights and most recently acquired a singer 201-2 in a wood cabinet with knee peddle for a good deal at $60.00. It was serviced and rewired in 1991. I gave it a good oiling and cleaning. She ran beautifully. Oh I also own from my teenage days a sears kenmore with cams. That baby has been miles I’m telling you!!! Often have said I wished it had a speedometer to see how far it’s been. Still going!

I bought a necchi esperia. The manual says 59 on the back. I just had the motor serviced since it smelled bad when operating, and the necchi fb page suggested it. He said it was bone dry. I have barely used it at all since I don't know how to sew yet, haven't used at all since getting motor back last week, because I need to get the handwheel off. I didn't know about oiling the motor and the manual doesn't mention oiling the motor at all. He told me to put one drop on each side Every Time I sew. I've heard otherwise since, and would like to know the truth please. My motor looks very similar to the one in your video. Thanks.

I have the White 455 and pulled the last thread guide off when my fingernail got caught in it while I was sewing as I was trying to remove my fabric. Is that that coiled silver guide sawdered to the shank? Is this going to be easy to replace or attach? Your video was great by the way!

I really enjoy your informative presentations of the vintage machines and suggestions for their care and preservation. Recently we were given a 1904 Model 27 treadle machine. As per your suggestions and tip I was able to clean, lube, and have the machine working again. The finish is somewhere between good to fair condition. The decals are quite intricate, being of the Egyptian theme design. My question is can the lacquer be rejuvinated/restored? Part of the lacquer on the back side of the machine has become cloudy and yellowed thus hiding some of the details of the decals. I have considered using a very fine polishing compound to try and eliminate the cloudiness. Sewing machine oil didn't really help much.

I have my mom's 401A Singer Sewing Machine. While cleaning, I put white lithium grease on the gears. After doing this, I heard it will get hard eventually and be very hard to clean the gears. I bought clear grease but need advice on cleaning off the white grease first. Thank you for your help.

A friend gave me a sewing cabinet that didn't have the machine any longer. I modified it to fit the Singer 301A cradle. The keyhole style hinges fit in the right spots, but the opening needed to be modified for the cradle. It appears it was made for a smaller machine with a wood flap covering the opening to the right side. When doing this I found the number 200 stamped inside. It has a oval shaped storage cubby inside a front door and 3 spool pins for thread. It has nipped corners that I have never seen before. Is there any tell tell signs to know that it is a Singer table vs. Necchi or something else?

I have a Kenmore mid-60s model 1751. I have 2 problems. they might be related. my feed dog control seems to be frozen in the up position. I do not see an abundance of crud but the machine was very dry. I used WD40 hoping to lose linkages. No luck after 48 hours. Would it help to use a hair dryer to maybe warm up old oil? My other problem is The stitches/inch adjustment knob moves well enough but the size of my stitches remains very small. Any hints? Kit Jenkins
